Writer/Designer Reading Journal #20 Feedback loop

A method for checking your work with your stakeholders. The process of designing then getting feedback from the client or supervisor then revising and redesigning and then back again in a loop until everyone is happy. If I were to make a piece of art for a client I would get info for what they want then I would do a mock up and then the client would tell me what they think and I would make any necessary changes until the client was satisfied.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #19 Association

Association uses an idea or concept related to your main purposes and uses a part of it to stand for a whole. Using one part of something to convey the whole thing. Logos use association a lot .Logos may start with the name of a company but as soon as they are known they can be just a symbol that is associated with the brand like the Nike swish

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #17 Representation

Representation is re-presenting, re-designing, and re-communicating. Essentially it's using an element or image to present something. Using balloons to symbolize a celebration or roses to symbolize love and romance.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #16 Subgenre

A sub-genre is a group of similar genres that fall under the same category.  essentially its a category of a category Like classic-rock, pop-rock, Alt-rock.

Writer/ Designer Reading Journal #15 Genre Convention

Conventions are the features that audiences expect from a text, Things that are expected in a design or situation. Like in designs made for kids you expect bright colors in the design.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #14 Genre

Genre is static categories of texts in broad terms. Genre is a way to describe a type of something. Like music a genre tells what type of music like country or rap or classical or pop.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #13 Proximity

Proximity means closeness in space. Proximity in design is how close elements are placed together and how that creates relationships If you had a bunch of circles all equidistant from each other they would be one uniform group but if some were closer to others it would separate them.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #12 Alignment

Alignment is how things line up. Alignment is pretty straightforward how things are placed on a page that is in line with each other or not in line with each other. Examples of alignment would be how your page is justified in a word document. You can also use alignment to create a feeling of calm by having everything perfectly aligned but you can create the opposite effect if you purposely leave things misaligned.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #11 Organization

In Writer/Designer they define organization as the way in which elements are arranged to form a coherent unit or functioning whole. I think this means the way the modes used in a design are used and applied to create the best design possible to give the strongest result. an example would be how a website is laid out and images and videos applied to create the most user-friendly and enticing website for the viewer to consume.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #10 Color

Color is helpful when determining emphasis in a visual text. Color is an element of art and design that has a wide array of uses. It can be used to create unity it can also be used to create contrast. It can also be a tool to create eye flow. Using colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel will produce a high contrast effect while using colors close to each other will create a more harmonious result. Warm colors will stand out against cool colors and demand more attention.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #9 Contrast

Contrast is the difference between elements, where the combination of those elements makes one stand out from the other. My Definition- Design elements that are different but make each other stand out. Example- Using a normal serif font with a bold script font to make parts stand out.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #8 Emphasis

Emphasis is stressing a word or group of words to give more importance. To me, this is using elements of design to make certain words stand out. An example of this might be using contrasting fonts and size to make certain words in a design stand out giving them more importance.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #7 Affordances

Affordances are the different strengths and weaknesses of media (video, writing, pictures, etc) and modes. Affordances are the important main uses for each mode and the reasons why or why not use certain media or modes. An example of affordances is like using visual mode and images to create a better impact on the viewer.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #6 Gestural Mode

Gestural mode refers to the way movement, such as body language can make meaning.  My definition of this would be how peoples movements and interactions show the meaning or feeling of a situation. An example of this mode is how actors interact with each other on-screen shows relationships and other important factors.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #5 Spatial Mode

Spatial Mode refers to the physical arrangement. To me, this is the composition of a design. The composition is the arrangement of elements on a picture plane to create overall eye flow. An example of something using spatial mode would be in graphic novels and comics, the way the panes are organized to help the reader follow the story chronologically.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #4 Aural Mode

Aural Mode focuses on sound, like speech, video, sound effects, audio elements of radio. To me, this means any part of a design that is hard with the ears. An example of this would be things like music added to a video, sound effects, and how the words are spoken in a radio show.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #3 Visual Mode

Visual Mode refers to the use of images and other characteristics that readers see. To me, this means anything that isn't the written word that a reader or consumer sees with their eyes in a design is using the visual mode. This would include photos, graphs, color for emphasis, and imagery. An example of this would be the parts of infographics that aren't written words. Also, any photos used in advertisements or articles.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #2 Linguistic Mode

The linguistic mode refers to the use of language, which usually means written or spoken words. To me, this means the use of text or spoken word of any sort in a design. In one of my other classes, we have to make an image that represents a word and has to also include the word. This means we have to apply the linguistic mode to the assignment. Also, this post would be in linguistic mode.

Writer/Designer Reading Journal #1 Touchpoints

Touchpoints are defined as ephemeral or real points of interaction between stakeholders (users, service providers, etc.) in a designed experience. To me, that means a touchpoint is anything that is part of a situation that affects the situation. An example of this might be like in the process of making a DQ Blizzard some things that would be touchpoints are the products (cup, ice cream, toppings), the machinery (the blender and the icecream machine), The employees training on how to use the machine and how to properly portion the product.
